Obi: Hunger and Unemployment Are Root Causes of Insecurity in Nigeria

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, expressed deep concern over the recent military strikes in Tungar Kara, Maradun Local Government Area, Zamfara State, which resulted in the tragic loss of 16 lives. His visit to Zamfara on Monday was aimed at offering condolences to the Emir of Gusau and the people of the state.

Represented by the Labour Party’s spokesperson, Tanko Yunusa, Obi conveyed his heartfelt sympathy to the people of Zamfara, stressing that the people who were meant to be protected were the ones who lost their lives. Yunusa also shared a message from Obi, emphasizing that whatever happens to the people of Zamfara directly affects the Labour Party candidate, and that’s why he sent Yunusa to extend his condolences until he can personally visit.

Obi pointed out that the ongoing insecurity in Zamfara and across the nation is closely tied to two key issues: hunger and unemployment. He argued that these challenges create an environment ripe for instability and violence. According to Obi, if Nigeria were to focus on prosperity, particularly through a boost in production rather than consumption, security would improve significantly. He called for the Nigerian government to prioritize production as a critical pathway to address the country’s most pressing challenges, including insecurity, hunger, and widespread unemployment.

The District Head of Tudun Wada Gusau, Bashir Danbaba, who received the condolence message on behalf of the Emir of Gusau, expressed gratitude to Peter Obi for his compassion and support during this difficult period for the people of Zamfara.
