NBA Udu Branch Apprehends Fake Lawyer Impersonating Barr Simon Sabuke
In a determined effort to rid the legal profession of fraudulent practitioners, vigilant members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Udu Branch, Delta State, led by David Omage Esq. and others, successfully apprehended a fake lawyer, Olubuwe Ossai Silas, who had been impersonating Barrister Simon Sabuke.
According to reports from Vanguard, Silas was caught in the act at a business center at Orugbo Plaza, Ovwian, while attempting to affix a scanned lawyer’s seal to a document and prepare fraudulent legal papers using the names of legitimate lawyers. Upon noticing the deception, the NBA members quickly intervened, overpowering Silas when he attempted to resist arrest. They promptly alerted the Ovwian Police Division, who took him into custody.
The Chairman of NBA Udu Branch, Edmund Odohisi, celebrated the successful operation, emphasizing the NBA’s zero-tolerance policy towards quacks and impostors within the legal field. “This is a testament to our commitment to maintaining the integrity of the legal profession,” Odohisi said, noting that a formal complaint had been lodged at the Ovwian Police Station, where Silas remains under investigation.
“The Divisional Police Officer has assured that this case will be thoroughly investigated, and we hope it will serve as a deterrent to others who attempt similar fraudulent activities,” Odohisi added. The branch had previously warned about the unlawful use of NBA car stickers by non-lawyers and has made consistent efforts to address impersonation in the profession.
Barrister Simon Sabuke, whose identity was being stolen by Silas, recounted the incident to Vanguard, explaining that he was urgently called by a senior lawyer to a location where he found his impersonator being confronted by other colleagues. “When they asked him if he knew me, he denied it, but they confronted him, telling him I was Simon Sabuke. He attempted to fight Omage, but we overpowered him and called the police, who took him away,” Sabuke explained.
This incident serves as a reminder of the NBA Udu Branch’s dedication to safeguarding the reputation and credibility of the legal profession by taking swift action against fraudsters.
