Mpu Community Erupts in Jubilation Over Beatrice Ekweremadu’s Return from UK Prison
The Mpu community in Enugu State was filled with celebration on Wednesday as news broke of Mrs. Beatrice Ekweremadu’s return to Nigeria after serving a prison sentence in the United Kingdom. The wife of former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, had been imprisoned for her involvement in an organ trafficking plot that shocked the world.
Mrs. Ekweremadu was sentenced to five years in prison in May 2023 for her role in attempting to harvest the kidney of a 21-year-old street trader from Lagos for her daughter, Sonia, who was battling kidney disease. She, her husband, and a medical doctor, Dr. Obinna Obeta, were convicted after the young man escaped the plot and reported the incident to authorities in the UK. The Ekweremadus were subsequently sentenced to lengthy prison terms.
Upon her return to Nigeria on Tuesday, Mpu community members expressed immense joy, with celebrations spilling across the village. Mr. Benjamin Chijioke, President of the Mpu Town Union Federated, shared the community’s relief, describing the day as one of boundless joy. “Since morning, it’s been a day of jubilation and celebration across all the villages,” he said.
Chijioke also highlighted the emotional impact on many locals who had relied on the Ekweremadu family’s philanthropy. “Tears of joy filled the air as our people rejoiced in Mrs. Ekweremadu’s return,” he added. The celebrations coincided with the community’s Orie market day, transforming the market into a vibrant hub of festivity.
“We are grateful to God and continue to pray for the safe return of our distinguished son, Senator Ike Ekweremadu. His absence has been deeply felt, but we remain hopeful for his return,” Chijioke stated, reflecting the community’s desire to see both members of the Ekweremadu family back home.
Mpu’s councillor, Ogbuka Edwin, echoed the sentiment of gratitude, acknowledging the gap left by the Ekweremadus’ absence. “It feels like a public holiday here in Mpu. The joy is overwhelming. We will continue to pray for Senator Ike Ekweremadu’s health and speedy return to his family,” Edwin said.
Social media platforms linked to the Mpu community were flooded with messages of celebration, prayers, and gratitude. One message read: “Daalu Ezinne! But I can’t wait to see Ikeoha Global—the man who shaped me politically. Great things are coming soon!” Another message shared a prayer: “May God’s name be praised forever. It can only be God.”
Among the jubilant responses was a community member’s heartfelt message: “Waoooi, good news! Thank you for everything. Dear mummy, you are highly, highly welcome, ma!” Amidst the festive atmosphere, the community remains hopeful that Senator Ike Ekweremadu will soon join his family and contribute once more to the growth of Mpu.
