“Sowore Blames APC’s Poor Governance for Deaths of Nigerian Politicians”
Omoyele Sowore, the human rights activist and convener of the #RevolutionNow Movement, has linked the deaths of several Nigerian political office holders in 2024 to poor governance and ineffective policies under the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Sowore, a former presidential candidate for the African Action Congress (AAC), made these remarks during a consultative meeting between the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and political parties in Abuja on Wednesday. The meeting discussed the impact of recent political deaths, which led to more than a dozen bye-elections across the country.
Sowore argued that the untimely deaths of over 12 political office holders were a direct result of the APC-led government’s governance failures. He stated that the ruling party remains unaware of the true challenges facing Nigeria.
In a social media post, Sowore shared details of his intervention at the meeting: “Today, I participated in a consultative meeting between INEC and political parties in Abuja, where an unexpected issue emerged concerning the numerous bye-elections held this year due to the deaths of over 12 political office holders across Nigeria. During my intervention, I emphasized that these premature deaths are a consequence of the APC’s poor governance and policies.”
Interestingly, Sowore revealed that his remarks seemed to amuse APC officials present at the meeting, including APC Chairman Gandollar and party secretary, ex-Senator Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru. Sowore noted, “Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru was screaming from his seat, ‘Sowore, you’ve come again!’ They don’t still get it!”
Sowore’s comments reflect growing concerns over the state of governance in Nigeria and the political instability triggered by the deaths of key office holders. His call for accountability continues to draw attention to the challenges faced by the current administration.
