“A Giant Falls: Wike Pays Tribute to General Useni”
The passing of Lt. General Jeremiah Timbut Useni, former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has been described by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike as the “fall of one of the biggest trees in the forest of Nigeria.” In a heartfelt message shared through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Wike expressed his sorrow and paid tribute to the late General, emphasizing his exceptional contributions to the development of the FCT during his tenure between 1993 and 1998.
Wike highlighted Useni’s long and distinguished career, saying, “From joining the Army at just 14 to becoming the Military Governor of the defunct Bendel State, Minister of Transport, Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army, FCT Minister, and later a Senator for Plateau South, General Useni led a life marked by service to the nation.” He added, “He was not just a military leader but also a statesman who prioritized service to the people above all else.”
The FCT Minister described the late General as a man who will be fondly remembered, especially by the Tarok people of Plateau State, for his dedication and exemplary virtues. “He will be deeply missed by the people of Plateau State, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and all Nigerians,” Wike said.
On behalf of himself and the residents of the FCT, Wike mourned the loss of a man he called “a great patriot, a fine military officer, a peacemaker, and a man of faith.” He concluded with a prayer: “May his soul rest in peace.”
