erandaMojisola Meranda has officially assumed office as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, following the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa. Meranda’s appointment came after Obasa was removed from office on January 13, 2025, amid allegations of gross misconduct, financial misappropriation, and abuse of office.
Obasa’s impeachment occurred while he was away in the United States, and he returned to Nigeria on Saturday to vehemently deny the claims and fault the impeachment process. According to Obasa, the impeachment did not follow due process, and he continues to assert that he remains the legitimate Speaker of the Assembly.
In the wake of the controversy, the Lagos State Governance Advisory Council (GAC) weighed in on the situation, with Secretary Mutiu Are describing the impeachment as a “family affair.” Are called for calm and urged that the issue be resolved amicably within the family, stressing the need for unity within the Assembly.
The tension surrounding the leadership change in the Lagos State House of Assembly continues to unfold, with both Meranda’s supporters and Obasa’s camp maintaining differing positions on the legitimacy of the impeachment process.
