The Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has extended an invitation to supporters of former Governor Rauf Aregbesola following their decision to part ways with the All Progressives Congress (APC). This comes after the Omoluabi Progressives, a political group loyal to Aregbesola, announced their split from the APC on Sunday, citing allegations of marginalization within the party.
In response, the Osun APC dismissed the group’s exit, calling it a “good riddance” and stating that the group had effectively distanced itself from the party as far back as 2022.
However, speaking in Osogbo on Tuesday, the PDP’s Director of Media and Publicity, Oladele Bamiji, acknowledged Aregbesola as a significant figure in Osun State politics. He emphasized that despite any internal party struggles, Aregbesola remains a political force that cannot be ignored.
Bamiji extended an open invitation to Aregbesola’s supporters, saying that the PDP was willing to welcome those who are dissatisfied with the APC and are seeking a party committed to good governance and inclusivity.
“Former Governor Rauf Aregbesola is undoubtedly a big player in Osun politics. As a former governor for eight years, no one can realistically ignore his influence in the political landscape of the state,” Bamiji stated. He also noted that internal conflicts within the APC were not surprising and are a natural part of the political process, driven by competing ambitions and ideas.
While the PDP official expressed uncertainty over the details of Aregbesola’s exit from the APC, he reiterated that the party would be open to any former APC members or their supporters who wish to join the PDP.
“PDP is now the party to beat in Osun State. We have made progress under Governor Ademola Adeleke, and many politicians are showing interest in joining us. We have a solid candidate that is loved by the people,” Bamiji added.
Meanwhile, a member of the Omoluabi Progressives group, speaking anonymously, downplayed speculation about the group’s future political moves. “It is still a bird kept inside a calabash. It can’t be known until it is revealed. People should not bother about it. We are coming out in a solid way,” the member said, hinting at future developments that would become clearer in due time.
