Hoodlums Kill Two in Delta State, Reprisal Attack Erupts in Hausa Settlement
Violence erupted in Mbiri, a community in Ika North East Local Government Area, Delta State, after two people were reportedly killed by suspected herdsmen on Tuesday. The killings took place along the farm road in Idumu-Ikeze Quarters and the Mbiri farm settlement road, throwing the community into a state of panic and confusion.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Command, Mr. Bright Edafe, the attack was carried out by unknown hoodlums. “Unknown hoodlums attacked the community, resulting in two fatalities. The community suspects the Hausa people were behind the attack, leading to a reprisal,” Edafe confirmed. The angry youths then launched an attack on the nearby Hausa settlement around Umunede community between 8 pm and 9 pm on Tuesday, burning down camps and several motorcycles in the process.
A source close to the situation revealed that the two victims were likely killed by suspected herdsmen. One of the deceased, it was reported, was on his way to check his cassava plantation when he encountered the suspected herdsmen, who have been causing unrest in the area. “The attack took place along the Mbiri farm settlement road, where one of the victims was a farm laborer,” the source stated.
After the killings, local youths retaliated by attacking the Hausa settlement along Umunede Road. They destroyed property and set fire to at least four motorcycles. Tensions escalated as the violence spread to other areas where the Hausa community resides.
The situation only began to de-escalate after intervention from the police, army, and vigilante groups, who worked together to restore calm to the affected areas. Despite the violence, authorities have managed to regain control and are continuing to investigate the killings and the reprisal attack.
