“Abia Assembly Passes Resolution to Address Collapse of Mbato Ofeme Bridge”
The Abia State House of Assembly has passed a resolution urging its committee on works to collaborate with the State Ministry of Works to carry out palliative repairs on the collapsed Mbato Ofeme Bridge in Umuahia North Local Government Area.
The collapse of the bridge has cut off the community from other parts of the state, causing significant hardship. Speaker Emmanuel Emeruwa, who announced the resolution on the floor of the House, emphasized the State government’s commitment to providing critical infrastructure across all parts of the state, including rural areas.
The resolution came after a Matter of Urgent Public Importance was raised by Mr. Anderson Akaliro, the representative for Umuahia North constituency. Akaliro highlighted the severe impact the bridge collapse has had on the community, urging immediate intervention to prevent the situation from worsening, particularly with the upcoming rainy season.
In addition to the bridge issue, the Abia House of Assembly also passed another resolution urging the State government to assist local governments and empower the Abia State Road Funds Administration Board and the Abia State Rural Access Road Agency to focus on the rehabilitation of rural roads across the state. This was in response to another Matter of Urgent Public Importance raised by Chijioke Uruakpa, the member representing Ugwunagbo constituency. Uruakpa highlighted the dire condition of rural roads in Wards 4, 6, and 7 in Ugwunagbo, which are in urgent need of repair.
The resolutions reflect the state lawmakers’ focus on addressing infrastructure challenges, particularly in rural communities, as they strive to improve road networks and ensure better connectivity for all residents.
