President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commemorated the legacy of Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, the esteemed designer of the Nigerian flag, with a generous donation of N30 million to his family. This act serves as a testament to the federal government’s recognition of Akinkunmi’s significant contribution to Nigeria’s national identity.
On Thursday, January 30, 2025, the National Orientation Agency’s (NOA) director-general, Lanre Issa Onilu, presented the cheque to Akinkunmi’s family at their Ibadan, Oyo State residence. During the presentation, Onilu highlighted that the government remains committed to honoring Akinkunmi’s enduring legacy and providing continued support to his family.
Earlier, Onilu had visited the tomb of the late Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi to express condolences to the family. He affirmed that the government would continue to acknowledge and celebrate the late Akinkunmi’s iconic contribution to Nigeria’s identity, emphasizing, “This gesture is a testament to the nation’s appreciation for Akinkunmi’s iconic contribution to Nigeria’s identity.”
