“Democracy in Nigeria: Gen. Abdulsalami Says There’s No Alternative to Civil Rule”
Former Military Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, has asserted that military rule in Nigeria is a thing of the past, emphasizing that democratic governance has proven its resilience and should be nurtured. Speaking at the launch of the book “100 Years of Political Parties Evolution in Nigeria, 1923 – 2023”, Abubakar reflected on the enduring strength of democracy in the country, highlighting that for the past 25 years, civil rule has thrived despite numerous challenges.
Gen. Abdulsalami, who handed over power to civilian authorities in 1999, expressed pride in laying the foundation for the nation’s democratic journey. He urged Nigerians and political parties to continue supporting and strengthening the country’s democratic structures, saying, “There is no alternative to civil rule.”
Addressing the audience at the event, which was organized by the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Abuja, Gen. Abdulsalami’s message was echoed by key figures such as House of Representatives Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, who emphasized the vital role of strong political parties and opposition in promoting good governance. Abbas also criticized the hijacking of political parties by individuals with deep pockets, advocating for reforms to ensure that parties serve as platforms for policy innovation rather than personal gain.
Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), further echoed the call for internal democracy within political parties.
Gen. Abdulsalami noted the remarkable survival of Nigeria’s democracy, citing it as a testament to Nigerians’ belief in representative governance. He called for party supremacy, adherence to party manifestoes, and the formation of ideologically-driven political parties. “Democracy is about the government of the people, by the people, and for the people,” he stated, emphasizing that sovereignty belongs to the citizens, not the military.
Reflecting on the milestone of 26 years of unbroken democracy, Abdulsalami called for continued nurturing of the democratic process, which he believes will eventually yield significant dividends for citizens. He also highlighted the importance of political parties’ development priorities to ensure political stability and successful elections.
The event also saw former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim underscore the need for a national dialogue to address Nigeria’s political instability. Anyim stressed that national unity and consensus are essential for resolving the country’s longstanding issues of insecurity and maladministration.
The Chairman of IPAC, Yusuf Dantalle, hailed the book as a valuable resource that reflects the trials, triumphs, and growth of Nigeria’s political landscape. The book not only chronicles the history of political parties but also serves as a beacon of knowledge for future generations to understand the evolution and resilience of Nigeria’s democracy.
In closing, Gen. Abdulsalami’s call for continued support of democracy and political party reforms resonated as a reminder to all Nigerians that the future of the nation lies in the hands of its people and their commitment to nurturing the democratic system.
