“Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro Condemns Closure of Joy FM by Benue Government”
Senate Minority Leader, Abba Moro, has strongly condemned the Benue State government’s decision to shut down Joy FM in Otukpo, calling the move an assault on press freedom.
In a statement released on Friday by his Media Aide, Mr. John Eche’Ofun, Moro criticized the forceful closure of the radio station, which was carried out by officials of the Benue State Internal Revenue Service (BIRS). He referred to the action as a “commando-style invasion” and described it as an attempt to silence the press.
“The closure of Joy FM is an unacceptable action in the 21st century, and it seeks to stifle media freedom,” Moro said. He emphasized that media houses must be allowed the freedom to operate as long as they comply with the law.
The senator expressed his solidarity with the management and staff of Joy FM during this difficult time, and he called for the station to be unsealed as soon as possible, enabling them to resume their crucial role in information dissemination.
The closure of Joy FM on Thursday was executed by the Benue State government and has sparked widespread criticism, as the radio station is owned by former Senate President, David Mark.
