The Afenifere Youth Coalition has sharply criticized Omoyele Sowore, the former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), for what they termed his “relentless attacks on Yoruba public office holders,” particularly targeting the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun.
Sowore, a well-known Nigerian activist, was recently arrested by the Nigeria Police after accusing IGP Egbetokun of unlawfully remaining in office. The activist was charged in a Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday, and granted N10 million bail.
In response to Sowore’s recent actions, the coalition’s Director of Strategy, Rasak Oladosu, and its President, Samuel Isijola, condemned Sowore for what they described as “defamation, blackmail, and cyberbullying,” and called for legal action to hold him accountable.
During a press conference in Lagos on Friday, the coalition accused Sowore of using social media to spread misinformation and fuel unrest in Nigeria. They labeled him a “failed politician and professional troublemaker” who has built his career on controversy rather than genuine activism.
The coalition also noted that Sowore’s presidential run under the AAC exposed his lack of leadership skills, pointing out his failure to gain significant electoral support. “To Nigerians, we say, do not be deceived by his theatrics. Sowore does not care about the Nigerian citizens, he only cares about his pockets and anti-democracy sponsors,” they warned.
Addressing Sowore’s supporters, the coalition urged them not to be manipulated by someone whose motives are self-serving. “Social media is not the court of law,” they reminded the public, urging the judiciary and security agencies to let the law take its course and ensure Sowore is held accountable for his actions.
The group emphasized that Nigeria is greater than any individual, stressing that they will not allow one person’s selfish agenda to hinder the nation’s progress.
