Lagos Lawmakers Deny Claims of Tinubu’s Intervention in Obasa’s Return
Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have swiftly dismissed reports claiming that President Bola Tinubu instructed them to reinstate former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa. Describing the allegations as “baseless,” lawmakers have even suggested that Obasa himself may be “daydreaming” about a potential return.
The controversy began with an online news report alleging that President Tinubu had directed lawmakers to pave the way for Obasa’s return, citing concerns that the political fallout from his removal might outweigh the benefits of holding him accountable for alleged misconduct. According to the report, a senior Lagos politician revealed that the president had allegedly said Obasa would return briefly before resigning on his own terms, as part of a “soft landing” strategy.
Lagos Assembly Rejects Report of President Tinubu Ordering Obasa’s Reinstatement
In response, members of the Lagos Assembly have strongly denied these claims. Some lawmakers expressed concerns about the negative consequences of reinstating Obasa, with one describing it as “trying to pacify a snake after its head was severed.” The anonymous lawmaker warned that such a move could lead to severe political ramifications.
Hon. Stephen Ogundipe, a member of the assembly, dismissed the report entirely in a WhatsApp message, stating, “I don’t understand. I’m not aware.” He clarified that Obasa, who was not suspended, would simply return as an ordinary member if he chose to come back.
Lawmakers Call Obasa’s Reinstate Claims ‘Baseless,’ Warn of Political Fallout
A source close to the assembly also strongly refuted the report, suggesting that it was fabricated by Obasa and his camp in an effort to create unrest within the assembly and the state. This source added that President Tinubu had no involvement in any attempt to reinstate Obasa, explaining that the president had previously advised Obasa that he had “done enough” after nearly a decade as Speaker.
“The report is not only false but a story planted and circulated by Obasa and his camp to create confusion,” the source said. “The president understands that such an order, no matter how angry he is over Obasa’s removal, would greatly harm his democratic credentials, and he would not want to travel that route.”
Obasa’s Comeback Story Debunked: Lagos Lawmakers Say Tinubu Had No Role
As the dust settles, the claims of President Tinubu’s involvement in Obasa’s return appear to be nothing more than a political tactic, with the Lagos Assembly firmly standing its ground. Lawmakers have reiterated that there is no truth to the allegations, asserting that any talk of Obasa’s reinstatement is simply a fabrication to disrupt the peace within the assembly.
