30 Inmates Freed in Yobe State as Part of Periodic Pardon Program
The Yobe State government has granted a pardon to 30 inmates who were remanded in various correctional facilities across the state for different offenses.
Alhassan Sule Mamudo, the Chief Information Officer of the Ministry for Justice, confirmed the pardon in Damaturu. He explained that the decision was made following recommendations from the State’s Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, which is chaired by Barrister Saleh Samanja, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice.
Before the inmates’ release, the advisory council conducted visits to Potiskum, Nguru, and Gashu’a correctional facilities to evaluate and determine which inmates were deserving of pardon.
Mamudo further explained that the Yobe State government periodically grants freedom to inmates convicted of minor offenses or those who have the option to pay fines. This initiative is aimed at reducing overcrowding in the state’s correctional facilities.
