Ilesa Under Siege: Police and Locals Clash in Fight Over Traditional Rule
Crisis erupted in Ilesa when tensions flared over an alleged attempt by some individuals from a quarter in Ilesa to install a monarch for the Ido-Ayegunle community, a move fiercely contested by the Esa-Oke people, who claim the area falls under their jurisdiction.
The confrontation quickly escalated into violence, with at least 10 people, including law enforcement officers, reported injured in the ensuing chaos. Witnesses described a scene of terror as dangerous weapons were used and gunshots rang out across the town.
In the aftermath, the Owamiran of Esa-Oke, Oba Adeyemi Adediran, called for calm and urgently sought the intervention of security forces to restore order. The Osun State Police Command responded by deploying officers to the area to prevent further escalation. According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Yemisi Opalola, seven policemen sustained injuries in the clash but efforts are ongoing to restore peace.
Residents of Ilesa, such as Bola Adeyemi, expressed fear and anxiety as businesses in the area were paralyzed, with many staying indoors to avoid the violence. The situation remains tense as security forces continue to work toward ensuring peace and stability in the community.
