“IGP Kayode Egbetokun Takes Strong Stand Against Unethical Practices in Police Force”

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has expressed serious concern over unethical practices within the Nigeria Police Force, including the unwarranted transfer of ongoing investigations and the inappropriate involvement of officers in civil disputes. In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, the IGP announced a series of measures aimed at promoting transparency, professionalism, and accountability within the Force.

Egbetokun highlighted several practices that have been undermining the integrity of the police force:

  1. Indiscriminate Transfer of Cases: The unauthorized transfer of ongoing investigations between jurisdictions without proper reasons.
  2. Misuse of Police Authority: The involvement of police officers in civil matters, particularly land disputes, that have no criminal elements.
  3. False Petitions: The filing of malicious or frivolous petitions intended to harass individuals or settle personal grievances.

To tackle these issues, the IGP introduced the following measures:

  • Strict Disciplinary Actions: Officers found transferring cases without proper authorization will face severe disciplinary action.
  • Limited Involvement in Civil Matters: Police officers are prohibited from intervening in civil disputes unless there is evidence of criminal activity.
  • Mandatory Petition Declaration: All petitions must be verified and authenticated before any police action is taken.
  • Sanctions for False Petitions: Individuals found submitting false petitions will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

The IGP also urged the public to channel complaints directly to the appropriate police units rather than bringing minor issues to his office. He reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to serving the public with fairness and integrity.

“The Nigeria Police Force is dedicated to serving the public with integrity and fairness. We will not tolerate any actions that undermine our mandate to protect lives and property,” the IGP stated.

Egbetokun reassured Nigerians that the Force would maintain high standards of professionalism and accountability, with strict penalties for officers or individuals who misuse police power or engage in unethical practices.

“We are determined to restore public trust in the Nigeria Police Force. Our officers must adhere to the highest ethical standards, and we will not hesitate to take action against those who violate these principles,” he concluded.
