ICPC Secures Conviction of Lagos Airport Supervisor for Corruption and Missing Funds
Mohammed Idris, a supervisor at the Hajj and cargo terminal gate of Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos, has been convicted for the diversion of N11 million. The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) successfully secured his conviction for false returns and corrupt self-advantage at the Ikeja Special Offenses Court.
During the proceedings, Justice O.A. Fadipe was informed by the ICPC that Idris was unable to account for missing funds that he had collected in the course of his duties. The ICPC’s counsel, Yvonne Williams-Mbata, presented a two-count charge against the defendant, revealing a total loss of N11,234,000 between February 2001 and April 2021, all of which occurred under Idris’s supervision.
The charges contradicted Sections 26(1)(b) and 25(1) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act of 2000. After considering the facts, Justice Fadipe sentenced Idris to one year in prison for each count, with a N1,000,000 fine for both counts. The sentences will run concurrently.
In addition to his imprisonment, Idris was ordered to be of good behavior and to enter a bond with the registry of the High Court for N2,000,000. Failure to comply with these conditions will lead to an additional ten years of imprisonment.
