Borno Speaker Applauds Tinubu’s Approval for N80 Billion Alau Dam Reconstruction
The Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abdulkarim Lawan, along with other members of the Assembly, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for granting immediate approval for the reconstruction and expansion of the Alau Dam.
The Alau Dam, a vital source of drinking water and commercial supply for the Maiduguri metropolis, collapsed on September 10, 2024, triggering devastating floods across the city. The disaster led to an unspecified number of fatalities and submerged critical infrastructure worth billions of naira.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, Speaker Lawan, on behalf of the lawmakers in Borno, congratulated both the state government and the people of Borno for the federal government’s timely intervention. He expressed immense gratitude for the N80 billion allocated for the dam’s reconstruction, approved during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on February 4, 2025, chaired by President Tinubu.
Lawan described the approval as a welcome development, especially given the socio-economic importance the project holds for the people of Borno. He emphasized that the reconstruction of the dam would significantly impact the state’s resilience and economic recovery if completed successfully.
“On behalf of my humble self and the entire Lawmakers, as well as all staff of the Borno State House of Assembly (BOSHA), we sincerely appreciate Mr. President and Commander-in-Chief, President Bola Tinubu, for his approval of N80 billion to reconstruct and expand the Alau Dam,” the Speaker stated.
He also extended praise to President Tinubu, Vice-President Kashim Shettima, Governor Babagana Zulum, and other stakeholders for their consistent support for flood victims and disaster relief efforts in the state.
Lawan acknowledged the state’s residents, particularly those impacted by the flood, who had begun to express concern as the next rainy season approached. He assured them that the federal government’s intervention to revive the dam has brought renewed hope to those who had lost hope.
The Speaker concluded by calling on all Borno residents to continue praying for peace and to offer their full support to the APC-led government, which is dedicated to addressing the needs of Nigerians, particularly in times of crisis.
