President Tinubu Abruptly Cancels Meeting Over GAC’s Delay in Obasa Reinstatement
President Bola Tinubu abruptly canceled a scheduled meeting with members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) after learning that they had failed to reach an agreement on his order to reinstate Mudashiru Obasa as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, sources informed The Peoples Gazette.
According to sources close to the situation, the meeting did not take place as Tinubu had already been briefed that the GAC members were coming to inform him that they could not implement his directive. The president, frustrated by the delay, called off the meeting and ordered the council members to return to Lagos and carry out his instructions immediately.
“The president had learned before the meeting that the council members had not reached a conclusion on his order regarding Obasa’s reinstatement,” sources told The Gazette. “He told them to go back and execute his order without further discussion.”
The Gazette had previously reported that the GAC had ignored Tinubu’s order and proposed an alternative solution, offering Obasa a senatorial ticket in the 2027 election in exchange for his resignation from the speakership. This proposal was made after a meeting held in Lagos on Monday, where the council also suggested the removal of Obasa’s replacement, Lasbat Meranda, and the appointment of a neutral figure to take over if Obasa agreed to the deal.
Formed without any constitutional or statutory authority, the GAC was created by Tinubu to manage Lagos’ political affairs. The council’s power remained unofficial, yet it wielded significant influence in the state’s political landscape.
After their meeting in Lagos, several GAC members traveled to Abuja to brief the president on the matter. However, upon arrival, they were left waiting for hours before they were informed that Tinubu had no interest in hearing their proposal. The president emphasized that the only matter at hand was the immediate reinstatement of Obasa, as his decision on the issue was final.
“The members who had come from Lagos waited for hours before being told by the president that he had no business with them unless they were there to carry out his order,” the sources said. “They were immediately dispatched back to Lagos with instructions to reinstate Obasa as speaker without further delay.”
Tinubu’s decision has now set the stage for the resumption of Obasa’s role as speaker, a move that underscores his firm control over Lagos’ political dynamics.
