NNPP Slams Impostors: ‘We Never Held a Convention in Lagos’
The New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) has issued a strong statement regarding recent political developments that have stirred controversy. At a press conference led by Dr. Ajuji Ahmed, the National Chairman of the party, NNPP responded to a fraudulent convention held in Apapa, Lagos State, by individuals falsely claiming leadership within the party.
Dr. Ahmed condemned the actions of these impostors, describing their efforts as a direct assault on the party’s integrity and the confidence of Nigerians. He clarified that these individuals were neither members nor leaders of the NNPP but were instead “sponsored elements” working against the party.
The NNPP National Chairman further emphasized that there is only one recognized NNPP, under his leadership, officially registered and recognized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He stated that any group or individual who claims to be NNPP under any other guise is not only unlawful but also dishonoring the values of decency.
“For the record, the NNPP has not held any National Convention recently,” Ahmed declared. He continued, “We did not inaugurate any new National Working Committee (NWC). The current NWC was formed in 2022, under the supervision of INEC, in accordance with the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act, 2022.”
Ahmed also pointed out that several former members of the party, who were engaged in anti-party activities, had been subjected to disciplinary actions. Despite facing these internal processes, they chose to involve themselves with outside forces, seeking to cause confusion and distract the party.
These disgruntled members have failed in multiple court cases across the country, including Abuja, Kano, Ekiti, Port Harcourt, and Katsina. Despite being expelled from the party, they persist in attempting to deceive the public and the courts. A Federal High Court in Abuja had ruled in April 2024 that these individuals were impostors, preventing them from representing the NNPP in any capacity.
In a final act of defiance, these individuals convened a so-called “National Convention” in a Lagos hotel lobby, ignoring a clear injunction from a court of competent jurisdiction. Dr. Ahmed reiterated that the NNPP does not operate from Apapa, and the so-called convention was nothing more than a farce, an event “held in a beer parlour,” with no legitimacy whatsoever.
In closing, NNPP reaffirmed its commitment to the values of democracy, transparency, and the rule of law, urging Nigerians to reject the fraudulent actions of those who seek to undermine the integrity of the party.
