Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has responded to critics within the All Progressives Congress (APC), claiming that their conscience will not allow them to “sleep.”
El-Rufai, who has recently been vocal in his criticism of the APC, pointed out that he had moved on from the issues, emphasizing that his actions, including his support for a Southern presidency within the party, were done for God, the country, and the party, expecting nothing in return.
He was reacting to comments made by Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and some members of the APC, who had recently praised his stance on rotating the presidency to the South. El-Rufai shared an old video in which Makinde commended APC governors, including himself, for putting aside personal ambitions and ensuring that the party’s presidential ticket was zoned to the South.
In the video, Makinde had said: “I must give kudos to governors on the platform of APC. Governors like El-Rufai, the governor of Jigawa, Mai Mala Buni, and that of Kogi. They came together within their party and said for the unity of this country, let’s sacrifice our ambition. Let the presidency rotate to the South.”
El-Rufai also shared a previous statement from APC chieftain Ayekooto Akindele, who praised him for blocking divisive political strategies ahead of the APC primary election and facilitating the southern power shift.
Posting on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, El-Rufai wrote: “We did what we did for God, Country, and Party, expecting nothing in return. What is unfolding is merely another life experience, and part and parcel of human nature. We have got over it and moved on, but their conscience won’t let them sleep well. Thanks anyway.”
El-Rufai has recently made headlines for his criticism of the APC’s lack of internal democracy, asserting that he no longer recognizes the party because its organs have not convened in the last two years.
