Atiku Abubakar Meets Obasanjo in Abeokuta, Dismisses 2027 Election Speculations
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar held a private meeting with his former boss, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, on Monday in Abeokuta, Ogun State. However, Atiku swiftly dismissed speculations that the meeting was related to the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking to journalists after the two-hour closed-door discussion, Atiku, who was the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, clarified that his visit was not politically motivated.
“I was not in Abeokuta to see Obasanjo because of 2027,” he said, emphasizing that the meeting was purely a courtesy call. Despite repeated questions, Atiku refused to comment on Nigerian politics or the upcoming election, leaving room for speculation about the true nature of his visit.
“It is a courtesy visit. I’m not going to talk about 2027 or politics. I’m not here because of 2027,” Atiku firmly stated.
Atiku arrived at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) around 12:36 PM and went straight to the Penthouse, where Obasanjo was waiting for the meeting. Members of Atiku’s entourage included Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi, former Cross River Governor Senator Liyel Imoke, former Sokoto Governor Senator Aminu Tambuwal, and Obasanjo’s personal friend Otunba Oyewole Fasawe, among others.
Atiku had previously visited Obasanjo during the lead-up to the 2023 presidential election.
