“House of Reps Reshuffles Committees, Establishes Two New Regional Bodies”
In a significant move, the House of Representatives announced on Thursday the reshuffling of its standing committees, alongside the creation of two new specialized committees aimed at overseeing regional development.
Speaker Abbas Tajudeen revealed the formation of the House Committee on the South West Development Commission and the House Committee on the North Central Development Commission. To lead these new bodies, Akin Adeyemi and Tunji Olawuyi will serve as chairpersons, with Clement Akani and Donald Ojogo as their respective deputies.
Explaining the rationale behind these new committees, Tajudeen noted that their creation was driven by the recent establishment of the regional commissions, stressing the need for robust oversight to ensure their effectiveness. “These committees will ensure that the regional commissions’ activities are properly monitored and aligned with national development goals,” he said.
In addition to the new committees, the Speaker also announced key leadership changes across existing committees. Isiaka Nasir Adegboyega will take over as Chairman of the House Committee on National Planning, replacing the former chairman, who has been appointed Deputy Chief Whip. Abiodun Akinlade was appointed as the new Chairman of the House Committee on Agricultural Services.
Further changes include the appointment of Tolulope Akande-Sadipe as the head of the Humanitarian Services Committee, Mustapha Ghali as Chairman of the Ethics and Privileges Committee, Garba Saleh Zock as Chairman of the Culture Committee, and Tajudeen Adesojee as Chairman of the Aviation Technology Committee.
In a historic moment, Speaker Tajudeen also announced that February 13 will now be recognized annually as Murtala Mohammed Day, in honor of the late General Murtala Mohammed, former Head of State. The House marked this significant decision by observing a minute of silence in remembrance of the late leader’s legacy.
