“The Price of Power: Femi Gbajabiamila Speaks on Losing His Freedom as Chief of Staff”

Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, has opened up about the immense challenges that come with his current role. During a conversation and book reading event at the Capital Club in Victoria Island, Lagos, Gbajabiamila revealed that becoming Chief of Staff was the hardest job he had ever undertaken, largely due to the high standards and tireless work ethic of President Tinubu.

Gbajabiamila admitted that the moment he assumed the role, he felt a significant loss of personal freedom. He explained that, unlike his time as Speaker of the House of Representatives, where he had more autonomy, the position of Chief of Staff required constant dedication and a heightened sense of responsibility.

“As Speaker, I was my own boss, and while I worked hard, I had the liberty to step back whenever I needed to recharge. I could travel and return with a refreshed mind. But now, as Chief of Staff, there’s a different level of commitment,” Gbajabiamila shared.

He went on to acknowledge that President Tinubu, with his vast knowledge and deep understanding of the job, made the task even more demanding. “Nothing in this world can prepare you for the role of Chief of Staff. Here, there is a boss who is not only strong but also incredibly knowledgeable,” he said. “As Speaker, the responsibility stopped with me, but as Chief of Staff, I’m working under a boss who knows his onions and has a clear vision for the country.”

Despite the demanding nature of the role, Gbajabiamila expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve, emphasizing that it was a “welcome development” in his career.
