APC’s Illegal Takeover Sparks Outrage in Osun
In a dramatic move to seize control of local government secretariats in Osun State, officials of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday forcefully took charge of council offices across several areas. While police were visible in some council areas like Osogbo and Olorunda, there was no law enforcement presence at the specific councils where the takeovers occurred.
The affected local governments included Obokun, Ife-East, Odo-Otin, Atakumosa-West, Orolu, Ejigbo, Ifelodun, and Ilesa-West, among others.
In response to the APC’s actions, the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly condemned the move, describing it as illegal and a direct affront to the rule of law. Speaking to journalists on behalf of the Assembly, he stated, “Today, members of the opposition party in the state, the All Progressives Congress (APC), forcefully broke into local government secretariats across the state. This unlawful invasion is not only a direct attack on our democratic institutions but also a clear violation of the rule of law and a threat to public peace and order.”
He further expressed alarm that security agencies, whose duty it is to uphold the law, were present during the illegal activities, adding, “This is unjust, unlawful, and unacceptable. Law enforcement agencies must never be seen aiding and abetting criminal activities.”
The situation has led to rising tensions in the state, with concerns over the breach of legal and democratic norms.
