Mojisola Meranda, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has strongly denied rumors claiming she resigned from her position. The speculation surfaced after an online report circulated, claiming that a circular dated February 17, 2025, suggested her resignation.
Meranda’s Chief Press Secretary, Segun Ajiboye, dismissed the rumors, stating, “I’m in the office. The Speaker is in the office. I don’t know where that is coming from.” The circulating circular, which lacked an official signature, was later found to be unverified.
The Lagos Assembly has been embroiled in a leadership crisis following the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru, who was impeached by a majority of lawmakers. The political tension escalated further when Obasa, the impeached Speaker, filed a motion seeking an accelerated hearing in the Ikeja Division of the State High Court. He is challenging the legality of his impeachment, and Meranda, as the current Speaker, is named as a defendant in the suit.
Through his lawyer, Chief Afolabi Fashanu, SAN, Obasa is requesting an expedited hearing of the case, including a swift response from Meranda and other defendants. Obasa’s application raises nine legal grounds, including the interpretation of various sections of the Nigerian Constitution and the House’s standing orders.
Despite these challenges, Meranda remains firm in her position as the Speaker.
