The main entrance to the Benue High Court complex in Makurdi has been blocked by large piles of sharp sand, leaving observers questioning the motive behind this unexpected development. Sources from the Ministry of Works and Housing, speaking on condition of anonymity, indicated that the blockage is related to ongoing renovations at the facility. However, the timing of the renovation is drawing attention, as it coincides with the ongoing saga surrounding the alleged removal of the Chief Judge of Benue State.
Upon visiting the High Court’s office in the Old GRA area near Makurdi Club, it was noted that the gate to the complex was locked, and stern security personnel were stationed at the entrance. One of the guards, displaying a weapon, stated that their presence was to ensure law and order at the court premises, which appeared to be in a state of heightened security.
The closure of the court and the blocking of the entrance have raised eyebrows, particularly because they follow closely on the heels of a recommendation by the Benue State House of Assembly for the removal of the Chief Judge for alleged gross misconduct. However, the National Judicial Council (NJC) intervened, nullifying the suspension of the Chief Judge, adding complexity to the situation.
Speculation is rife as to whether the renovations are merely coincidental or if they are somehow connected to the political and judicial turmoil surrounding the Chief Judge’s position. The situation is being closely monitored as tensions mount in the state’s legal and political spheres.
