A 200-level Chemical Engineering student from the Federal University, Otuoke, is feared drowned at the Ekoli Creek in Yenagoa after making a bet to swim across the river for N300.
The incident occurred on Sunday morning, and as of now, the student’s body has yet to be recovered, and the identity of the deceased remains unknown.
Sources close to the situation revealed that the student had placed a bet with some of his coursemates, wagering that he could swim across the creek. The N300 stake was raised by the group, and as the student attempted to swim across the river, he went under the water and has not resurfaced since.
A student of the university who spoke anonymously shared, “Yesterday morning, a 200-level Chemical Engineering student made a bet with his coursemates to swim across the river. They all raised N300 each for the stake. As he was swimming, he dipped and has not been seen after that. He is still missing up till now.”
Efforts to reach Ms. Mercy Ekott, the university’s Public Relations Officer, were unsuccessful as she did not answer calls to her mobile number.
When contacted for comments, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Musa Mohammed, said he had not been briefed on the incident and could not confirm the name of the deceased student. “I have no information on the incident,” he said, adding that he would provide updates once he received any.
