Anambra Police Shake-Up After Suspects in Justice Azuka’s Murder Escape Custody
In a decisive move following the escape of two prime suspects in the murder of Hon. Justice Azuka, the Anambra Police Command has instigated a major shake-up within its Rapid Response Squad (RRS). This comes just one week after the two individuals, linked to the gruesome killing of the Onitsha North House of Assembly Member, managed to break free from police custody.
The state police, led by Commissioner Ikioye Orutugu, is implementing swift reforms to enhance its operations, including deploying additional officers to high-risk areas to guarantee public safety. This is especially critical with separatist groups calling for a Monday Sit-At-Home Order, which has historically disrupted business activities across the state.
Governor Soludo Joins Police Chief for Major Security Reforms
During an inspection of the Rapid Response Squad Headquarters at Awkuzu, Governor Charles Soludo and CP Orutugu reviewed the state’s security preparedness. This visit highlighted the ongoing efforts to tackle the escaped murder suspects and ensure such security lapses don’t repeat.
CP Orutugu assured the public that steps were already underway to reorganize the RRS unit. Part of this restructuring includes rigorous interviews with suspects in custody to uphold transparency and reinforce accountability, which will ultimately increase the integrity of police investigations.
Tackling the Sit-At-Home Crisis with Increased Security Forces
As the separatist-organized Monday Sit-At-Home orders continue to threaten peace, the Anambra Police Command has intensified its efforts. On February 24, 2025, a massive deployment of security personnel was initiated across strategic areas in the state, with additional patrols to prevent any violence or disruptions.
SP Tochikwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer, emphasized CP Orutugu’s resolve to halt the sit-at-home order, calling on the people of Anambra to remain united and continue to condemn any actions that jeopardize the state’s peace. The police are actively reviewing both kinetic (military-based) and non-kinetic (community engagement) strategies to stabilize the situation.
Governor Soludo and Police Chief Remain Committed to Public Safety
Governor Soludo’s unwavering commitment to the safety of Anambra residents was made clear during his tour of the RRS facility, as he and CP Orutugu promised enhanced policing strategies. They pledged to continue prioritizing effective policing, strengthening the judicial system, and working with the public to ensure the state’s security and peace.
This renewed focus comes as the police seek to ensure swift justice for the murder of Hon. Justice Azuka, capture the escaped suspects, and restore order in the face of ongoing civil unrest.
