Ex-President Babangida Reflects on Mokwa Flood Tragedy: “Ordained by God, Beyond Our Powers”

Former Nigerian Military President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida has described the catastrophic flood that ravaged Mokwa Local Government Area in Niger State, claiming over 200 lives, as “ordained by God” and beyond human control.

The flood swept through Mokwa, leaving families displaced and destroying livelihoods. Babangida extended his deepest condolences to the people of Mokwa and the entire Niger State government.

During a Sallah homage visit from a delegation led by Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba at his Minna residence, Babangida called on residents to continue praying for the souls of the deceased and for peace and stability in the region.

“What happened in Mokwa is unfortunate but it is ordained by Allah. It is beyond our powers and this is why we should all continue to pray for the souls of the deceased,” Babangida said.

He also commended Governor Umaru Bago’s administration for its developmental initiatives and urged the government to sustain such progress.

Deputy Governor Garba acknowledged Babangida’s concern, saying, “We are aware that the General is deeply disturbed by the incident in Mokwa. We need prayers from all quarters, and we appreciate your fatherly role especially during this trying time. The people of Niger State and Nigeria at large are grateful for your dedicated service. We assure you that the State Government remains committed to supporting you as a pillar of hope for the nation.”

The Mokwa flood, one of the deadliest in recent memory, has left families devastated. Many were swept away by the raging waters. Survivor testimonies reveal the immense trauma endured. Rabi Musa tragically lost her husband and three children, recalling how her husband’s attempt to rescue their children ended in disaster.

Similarly, Malam Balarabe Isah recounted losing his three wives and seven children, describing the experience as incomprehensible and deeply traumatic.

Beyond the human toll, the flood has severely disrupted the local economy and health systems. Numerous businesses have been destroyed, and commercial activities remain stalled. The Mokwa General Hospital is overwhelmed with patients, and there are urgent fears about potential outbreaks of waterborne diseases due to inadequate access to clean water and electricity.

The Niger State government has pledged a thorough investigation into the flood’s causes to prevent future tragedies.

As the communities begin the daunting process of rebuilding, urgent calls for relief and humanitarian aid continue to grow, aiming to ease the suffering and restore hope.
