Lateef Akangbe: Let’s Make Democracy a Culture, Not a One-Day Event

As Nigeria celebrates Democracy Day on June 12, former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Lagos Branch, Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN, FCIArb(UK), has issued a powerful call for national reflection and renewal. He urged Nigerians to move beyond symbolic ceremonies and embrace the true spirit of democratic governance.

In a passionate Democracy Day message, Akangbe emphasized that democracy must be more than an abstract principle—it should be a lived reality where every citizen’s voice is heard, every vote respected, and real power belongs to the people.

“But we must confront the truth,” he said. “Too often, our elections fail to reflect the people’s will. Too often, it’s the courts that determine winners—when it should be the ballot box. That’s not just unfair; it’s a deep injustice.”

Akangbe criticized the growing trend of courtroom victories replacing electoral mandates, warning that such practices erode public confidence in the democratic system.

He urged Nigerians to prioritize integrity over desperation, and to nurture democracy as a daily commitment rather than a once-a-year celebration. “We owe our children and youths a better Nigeria,” he said. “One where democracy is not just a day, but a way of life.”

He ended with a resounding call to action:
