Senate President Akpabio Reveals 844 Bills Passed in Just Two Years of 10th National Assembly

Senator Godswill Akpabio, President of the Nigerian Senate, announced on Thursday that the 10th National Assembly has passed no fewer than 844 pieces of legislation since its inauguration.

The announcement came during the joint session of President Bola Tinubu and lawmakers convened at the National Assembly as part of Nigeria’s Democracy Day activities.

The event was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation Senator George Akume, members of the Progressive Governors Forum, and several serving and former legislators.

Notably, President Tinubu canceled his planned nationwide broadcast to mark the 26th anniversary of Nigeria’s Democracy Day.

In his address, Akpabio highlighted the impressive legislative productivity, noting that 107 bills are currently under committee review, while 499 bills have progressed to the Senate’s second reading stage.

“The Senate has introduced 844 bills within two years. 107 bills are currently at various committee stages, and 499 bills have advanced to the second stage in the Senate,” Akpabio stated.

He further revealed that the Senate has acted on 26 executive bills addressing key national policy matters, alongside processing over 100 petitions from citizens seeking accountability and transparency.

Akpabio described this legislative output as unprecedented in Nigeria’s Senate history for a comparable timeframe.

During his speech, the Senate President appealed to President Tinubu to consider the establishment of a June 12 museum dedicated to preserving the history and relics of the landmark 1993 presidential election.

Stressing the importance of collaborative governance, Akpabio declared, “Where governance is in partnership, progress follows. But where governance is in contest, the people suffer. Democracy is not a gift but a trust to protect.”
