Abia PDP Heads to Appeal Court Over Disqualification of LG Candidates

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State has announced plans to file an appeal at the Court of Appeal in Owerri next week, challenging a High Court ruling which it says attempted to disqualify its candidates for the November 2, 2024 local government elections.

State Chairman of the PDP, Hon. Abraham Amah, made the disclosure while addressing an expanded South East Zonal PDP meeting in Umuahia on Friday.

Amah clarified that contrary to widespread rumours, the judgment did not dissolve or disqualify the party’s executive structures at any level in the state.

“The claim that the court sacked all PDP structures from ward to state level is entirely false and misleading. There was no such order in the judgment, and we have now obtained the Certified True Copy (CTC) to confirm this,” he said.

He explained that the party began seeking the CTC as early as May 6, 2025, and only recently received it.

“The judgment was very clear. It only attempted to disqualify our councillorship and chairmanship candidates for the last local government election. But we are not letting that stand — our legal team has already filed the necessary documents at the Bende High Court, and by next week, they’ll be at the Court of Appeal in Owerri,” Amah stated.

He also used the opportunity to commend former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu and Senator Austin Akobundu (Abia Central) for their ongoing support and contributions to the party’s strength and cohesion in the state.

In his remarks, the PDP National Vice Chairman (South East), Chief Chidiebere Goodluck, along with the Deputy National Legal Adviser, Barr. Okechukwu Osuoha, and the five South East state PDP chairmen, reaffirmed their recognition of Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the authentic National Secretary of the PDP.

The meeting, attended by top party stakeholders across the South East, also reaffirmed the PDP’s commitment to legal and democratic processes in resolving internal and external disputes.
