SGF Akume: “The Days of Bloodshed in Benue Are Numbered”

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has declared that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is determined to bring an end to the persistent violence in Benue State and the wider North Central region, assuring that “the days of bloodshed are numbered.”

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday at his residence in Makurdi, Akume, a former governor of Benue, stressed that the Renewed Hope Agenda prioritizes the security and welfare of all Nigerians.

“The Renewed Hope Agenda is clear. We will protect our people at all costs. Mr. President has given strict orders that these killers must be fished out and punished,” he said.

Akume’s assurance comes days after President Tinubu visited Benue to personally assess the security situation. The SGF revealed that the president was “visibly moved” by the suffering of displaced persons and victims of attacks.

“When the President came here, he saw firsthand the pains of our people. His directive to security agencies is unambiguous: leave no stone unturned in restoring peace,” Akume added.

He praised the efforts of security forces working in affected communities and urged unity across political, traditional, and community lines to achieve lasting peace.

“I urge our governor, traditional rulers, lawmakers, and all leaders to speak with one voice. We must set aside our differences and work together for peace.”

Akume also called for renewed support for his peace initiative, introduced during his governorship, and urged the Benue State Government to mobilize all sectors in support of peacebuilding efforts.

Highlighting the federal government’s response, Akume said that agencies such as NEMA are actively responding to the humanitarian crisis. He further emphasized that a blend of military operations and development programs will be deployed to address the root causes of violence.

“We are combining military action with developmental programs. This administration will not rest until Benue people can sleep with their eyes closed. The era of impunity is over.”

Despite the government’s assurances, reactions from displaced communities remain cautious. A community leader from Guma LGA, Terhemen Akor, told Vanguard:

“We’ve heard many promises before. We hope this time there will be real action.”

Years of killings and displacement—often attributed to armed herders and bandits—have devastated Benue and surrounding states. Akume’s strong statement, paired with Tinubu’s symbolic visit, signals a renewed federal push to reclaim peace and justice in the region.
