Beaten to Death: Two Anambra Guards to be hanged for torturing a suspect to death in Diamond Estate -Court Rules

In a landmark judgment that brought justice for a life brutally cut short, the High Court of Anambra State sitting at Idemili has sentenced two security guards, Uchenna Onyibor and Emmanuel Okechukwu, to death by hanging for the murder of 28-year-old Chinonso Madu.

Delivering judgment in Charge No. HID/29c/2019 — State v. Onyibor & Anor — Honourable Justice Chudi Nwankwo of High Court 2, Ogidi, found the two defendants guilty of murder after years of trial. The courtroom was tense as the death sentence was pronounced, marking the end of a tragic and harrowing chapter for the family of the deceased.

According to the prosecution led by J.O. Nwankiti, Assistant Chief State Counsel, and Uju Igboeli, Senior State Counsel, the incident occurred on the night of September 24, 2019, at Diamond Estate, where the convicts served as security guards. The victim, Chinonso Madu, was apprehended around 10:30pm–11:00pm for allegedly loitering and failing to provide a satisfactory explanation of his presence.

Rather than hand him over to authorities, the guards took justice into their own hands, subjecting the young man to a savage beating and prolonged torture. By morning, when their superior arrived and saw the victim’s condition, he ordered that Madu be rushed to the hospital. But it was too late — Chinonso was already dead.

Throughout the trial, the defense maintained the innocence of the accused, pleading not guilty. But the prosecution, calling five witnesses and presenting both confessional and circumstantial evidence, painted a compelling picture of fatal abuse of power. The judge, weighing the evidence carefully, concluded that the acts of the defendants directly caused the victim’s death.

“This is not only a victory for justice but a powerful warning to all security agents who think themselves above the law,” said N.S. Emeka, Secretary of the Legal Officers Association of Nigeria (LOAN), Anambra State Chapter. “The rule of law must prevail, and every life must count.”
