“Justice for Teen Okpa Seller: Rapist Sentenced to Life in Awka”
In a resounding victory for justice and the fight against gender-based violence, the High Court of Anambra State, sitting at the Children, Sexual, and Gender-Based Violence Court in Awka, has sentenced a 24-year-old man, Michael Okoi, to life imprisonment for rape and related offences.
In Charge No. A/63c/2024, State v. Michael Okoi, the court found the defendant guilty of rape, unlawful infliction of physical injury, and offensive conduct, contrary to the provisions of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Law of Anambra State.
The case, prosecuted by Chinelo Oge Akorah, a Senior State Counsel with the Anambra State Ministry of Justice and Public Relations Officer of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), involved a harrowing attack on a 17-year-old girl who was selling Okpa. Okoi, a security guard, lured the girl into a security post under false pretenses, threatened her with a firearm, and forcefully violated her.
Medical evidence presented in court confirmed extensive physical trauma. In his ruling, the presiding judge condemned the assault as “wicked, brazen, and reckless,” before imposing a life sentence and an additional ₦400,000 fine on the convict.
Despite being overcome with emotion and shedding tears in court, the victim was said to have found relief knowing her attacker would face justice. The case, from investigation to conviction, lasted only seven months—a testament to the diligence of the prosecution and the swift processes instituted by the Anambra State Government and Judiciary to address sexual and gender-based violence.
Speaking on behalf of the Law Officers Association of Nigeria, Anambra State Chapter, Secretary N. S. Emeka Esq. emphasized the importance of continued legal advocacy:
“While no sentence can undo the trauma suffered by the victim, this judgment affirms our collective resolve to protect the most vulnerable and ensure that perpetrators of such heinous crimes are brought to justice.”
