“Nigeria Is A Lawless Country” — Peter Obi Condemns Alleged Demolition Of Brother’s Office In Lagos, Links Action To His Presidential Ambition
Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State and prominent Labour Party figure, has raised serious concerns about what he describes as illegal demolition of his younger brother’s office in Lagos, accusing authorities of targeting him because of his presidential ambitions.
In a statement released Tuesday, Obi lamented, “I know what I have been going through as a person — an abuse of my human rights — just because I contested a presidential election, which is my legitimate right.”
Obi recounted how his youngest brother’s company property in Ikeja, Lagos, was reportedly invaded and demolished without proper legal procedures.
“This morning, my youngest brother called me frantically, saying that a group of people had stormed his company premises and were destroying the building,” Obi revealed. “I immediately rushed from Abuja to Lagos and went straight to the site.”
According to Obi, those carrying out the demolition claimed to have a court judgment authorizing the action. “But when I requested to see the judgment, you wouldn’t believe it—it was issued against an ‘unknown person’ and squatters,” he said. “There was no demolition order or permit presented either.”
Obi questioned how a court could issue such a judgment in a case shrouded in legal farce. “No one was served any notice. No names were written on the documents. Yet, they showed up with excavators and tore down a building that has stood for over 15 years. This reeks of coordinated lawlessness and impunity. Our country has become lawless.”
Efforts to reach Lagos authorities for comment on the incident were unsuccessful.
The former presidential candidate warned that ongoing lawlessness like this will drive investors away from Nigeria. “Nigeria is a lawless country. Until laws are enforced to protect citizens, nobody will want to invest here,” Obi stated gravely.
