Naira Trickles In: Civil Servants Get Second Slice of Delayed ₦35,000 Award

Federal Government Pays Second ₦35,000 Arrears to Civil Servants — Three Tranches Remain

The Federal Government has released the second tranche of the ₦35,000 wage award arrears owed to federal civil servants, the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) confirmed on Friday.

In a statement signed by Bawa Mokwa, Director of Press and Public Relations at the OAGF, the government emphasized that one month’s arrears had already been paid previously, and with the latest disbursement, three months’ worth of payments remain.

“The Federal Government has not reneged on its commitment,” the statement read, addressing growing concerns among workers about potential delays or defaults.

The arrears stem from a ₦35,000 wage award introduced to cushion the effects of recent economic reforms, including subsidy removal. The payments are being made in monthly instalments.

The OAGF reiterated that the government is committed to fully settling the outstanding amounts, and that payments will continue until all arrears are cleared.

“Contrary to speculation, the wage award arrears are being paid, and the process will continue until the remaining three tranches are completed,” Mokwa said.

The confirmation offers a measure of relief for thousands of civil servants, many of whom are grappling with rising inflation and the soaring cost of living.
