UK Jails Nigerian Man for Brutal Rape in Gloucester
A 33-year-old Nigerian man, Segun Ogundipe, has been jailed for five years in the United Kingdom after raping and sexually assaulting a woman in Gloucester.
Ogundipe, who lived on Tuffley Lane, was convicted at Gloucester Crown Court of rape, two counts of sexual assault, and assault by penetration — crimes he denied. The sentencing came just days after another Nigerian, Elvis Nosakhare, was jailed for a separate child sex offence.
Police said the attack happened in 2022 after Ogundipe met the woman at her workplace and invited her for drinks. Throughout the evening, he made sexual remarks that left her uncomfortable. Under the guise of picking something up from his home, he drove her to his house, where she was sexually assaulted and raped after using the bathroom.
On the way to Cheltenham afterwards, Ogundipe continued touching her despite repeated pleas to stop. Luckily, a police patrol pulled over his car, giving the victim a chance to escape. Initially reluctant to speak, she eventually told an officer she had been raped.
Ogundipe claimed in court that the encounter was consensual, but the jury rejected his version. Judge Lowe acknowledged positive character references but stressed that the gravity of the crime demanded prison. Ogundipe will be deported after serving his sentence.
In a statement read in court, the survivor described the deep trauma she suffered, saying she lost her job, her confidence, and her spark. “What you did was vile… I became scared to meet new people, even to smile, for fear it would be taken the wrong way,” she said.
She urged other survivors to come forward: “You will be believed and supported.”
Detective Constable Jon Furse praised her bravery, vowing that police will continue to bring sexual offenders to justice.
