FG Files Terrorism Charges in 2022 Owo Massacre Case
The Federal Government will on Monday arraign five men accused of carrying out the June 5, 2022 bombing of Saint Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State.
The suspects — Idris Omeiza, Al-Qasim Idris, Jamiu Abdulmalik, Abdulhaleem Idris, and Momoh Abubakar — are scheduled to appear before Justice Obiorah Egwatu of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
They face nine counts bordering on terrorism, following a Federal Government charge that links them to one of the deadliest attacks in Nigeria’s recent history.
The arraignment comes three years after then Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor, announced their arrest. The National Security Council had earlier attributed the massacre to fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
The Owo attack left more than 40 worshippers dead and dozens injured when armed men stormed the church during Sunday mass, detonating explosives and opening fire on congregants.
