NBA Leaders, Senior Advocates, Lawyers Battle-Ready Today as Court Finally Hears Ngene’s Appeal
The long-delayed appeal of detained lawyer, Mr. Bright Emeka Ngene, is finally set for hearing today, as top leaders of the Nigerian Bar Association, Senior Advocates of Nigeria, and scores of lawyers converge on the Enugu High Court in what has been described as a defining moment for justice and the rule of law.
From early hours, the Enugu High Court Complex is expected to witness an unprecedented show of legal solidarity, following months of outrage over Ngene’s continued incarceration at the Enugu Correctional Centre and persistent delays in the determination of his appeal.
The case, which has shaken legal circles nationwide, stems from Ngene’s controversial conviction by an Enugu Magistrate Court for theft and conspiracy— a judgment many lawyers and rights advocates have repeatedly described as a grave miscarriage of justice.
What deepened the crisis was the extraordinary development in which three judges of the Enugu State Judiciary reportedly recused themselves at different stages of the appeal, leaving the embattled lawyer trapped in custody while his appeal lay dormant.
The matter drew the full attention of the Nigerian Bar Association Human Rights Institute (NBA-HRI), with its Chairman and NBA 1st Vice President, Mr. Sabastine Anyia, openly condemning the situation as distressing, unjust, and corrosive to public confidence in the justice system.
Today’s hearing follows a nationwide call by the NBA leadership urging lawyers—particularly members of the Eastern Bar Forum— to troop to court in defence of one of their own and in protection of the integrity of the legal system.
“Justice for one is justice for all. Today it is Bright Ngene; tomorrow it may be any lawyer,” the NBA had warned, insisting that prolonged judicial delays amount to punishment without final determination.
Senior Advocates of Nigeria handling the appeal are said to be fully prepared, while Anyia himself has confirmed his personal attendance at the proceedings, underscoring the seriousness with which the Bar views the case.
