Otu Oka-iwu Abuja in Mourning as Secretary-General, Ogechukwu Okafor, Dies

The legal community in the Federal Capital Territory has been plunged into fresh grief following the sudden death of Barrister Ogechukwu Okafor, Secretary-General of Otu Oka-iwu Abuja, the Association of Igbo Lawyers in Abuja, and a respected member of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Abuja Branch.

Barrister Okafor reportedly passed away on Tuesday afternoon after a brief relapse linked to health challenges she had been battling with remarkable resilience. Her demise came at a time when colleagues and friends were still holding on to hope after indications of recent medical progress.

The sad news was formally announced by the President-General of Otu Oka-iwu Abuja, Chief Chidi Udekwe, in an emotional message circulated to members of the Association. According to him, despite being rushed back to the hospital and concerted efforts by medical personnel to stabilise her condition, she sadly succumbed.

Chief Udekwe described the loss as deeply devastating, particularly given its painful coincidence with the Association’s ongoing mourning of another member, Princess Chigbo. He lamented that the group has once again been confronted with sorrow at a moment when it was preparing to lay another sister to rest, noting that “the sun has again set at noon” for the Association.

Barrister Okafor was widely admired for her commitment to professional excellence, organisational service, and her unifying presence within both Otu Oka-iwu Abuja and the NBA Abuja Branch. Colleagues describe her as dedicated, compassionate, and ever willing to serve.

Her passing has triggered an outpouring of tributes across the Abuja Bar, as members of the legal profession mourn the loss of a colleague whose contributions and warmth will be sorely missed.
