Most Corrupt Judges: NBA President’s Sweeping Generalisation Unfair to Diligent Judges — Ken Ahia, SAN
Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr. Ken Ahia, SAN, has cautioned against what he described as sweeping generalisations in the debate on judicial corruption triggered by comments from the NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN.
Ahia acknowledged that corruption is a national challenge affecting many sectors, including the judiciary, but insisted that it would be inaccurate to suggest that judicial decisions are generally determined by bribery.
Speaking to Vanguard Newspapers, He argued that such assertions fail to recognise the many judges who are conscientious, diligent, and unwilling to compromise their oath of office for any form of inducement.
According to him, several judgments perceived as poor or unsatisfactory are often the result of heavy caseloads, limited time for detailed review, or lack of industry, rather than corruption.
Ahia stressed that not every flawed judgment should be attributed to bribery, urging that public discourse on the judiciary must remain balanced, evidence-based, and focused on strengthening the justice system rather than eroding public confidence.
