Tonye Clinton Jaja to Award Seyi Tinubu, 4 Others the Controversial Blue Silk Award

The controversial Blue Silk initiative promoted by Dr Tonye Clinton Jaja has taken another politically sensitive turn following the selection of Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu and a prominent figure in the CityBoys Movement, among five Nigerians scheduled to receive the disputed Senior Counsel of Nigeria (SCN) designation.

The proposed conferment, scheduled for Thursday, November 5, at Top Rank Hotel, Utako, Abuja, has raised fresh questions about the legitimacy of the initiative, particularly against the background of a Federal High Court judgment that declared the proposed Blue Silk conferment void and unrecognised by law.

Seyi Tinubu, whose CityBoys Movement has been mobilising support for President Tinubu’s political activities and anticipated 2027 re-election campaign, is listed alongside The Nation columnist Mobolaji Sanusi, Alabi Olalekan Adigun, Francis Ibekwe and Olufunmilayo Osifuye as recipients of the proposed recognition.

Jaja, who has been presenting himself as Executive Director of the Nigerian Law Society (NLS), reportedly announced the five recipients in a statement explaining that the Blue Silk initiative was established to recognise outstanding lawyers whose professional contributions fall outside conventional courtroom litigation.

However, the planned ceremony is taking place amid a serious legal and institutional dispute over Jaja’s authority to promote the designation and represent the NLS.

In a judgment delivered on May 13, 2026, in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/421/2026, the Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice James Omotosho, dismissed a suit involving the Incorporated Trustees of the Association of Legislative Drafting and Advocacy Practitioners (ALDRAP) and Dr Tonye Clinton Jaja over the Blue Silk initiative.

The court reportedly held that the applicants could not rely on the constitutional right to freedom of association to create an alternative professional rank outside the statutory framework regulating legal practice in Nigeria. It consequently declared the proposed conferment void and granted a perpetual injunction restraining the applicants from conferring the designation or related titles not recognised under the Legal Practitioners Act.

The controversy deepened following a public disclaimer by the Nigerian Law Society, which disowned Jaja’s claim to represent or control the organisation and challenged his continued use of its name and institutional identity.

In September 2026, the NLS announced that it had petitioned the Inspector-General of Police against Jaja, Ambassador Dahiru Aliyu and others over allegations bordering on impersonation, fraud, forgery and unauthorised use of the society’s identity.

The society stated that Jaja was engaged as its Executive Director on July 12, 2024, but that his appointment was not renewed. It further alleged that he resigned on July 21, 2025, before subsequently laying claim to the ownership or control of the organisation.

The NLS also raised concerns about activities being conducted in its name, including the proposed annual general conference and the Blue Silk conferment ceremony. The allegations contained in the petition have not, by themselves, established criminal liability against the persons named.

The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee had also cautioned legal practitioners against adopting or promoting the Blue Silk designation, maintaining that the SAN rank remains the statutorily recognised professional distinction under the Legal Practitioners Act.

Despite these objections, Jaja and persons associated with the initiative have continued to defend the proposed recognition, arguing that it is intended to acknowledge professional excellence in non-litigation areas of legal practice.

The selection of Seyi Tinubu has introduced an additional political dimension to the controversy, given his prominent association with the CityBoys Movement and its mobilisation efforts in support of his father’s political ambitions.
