4 feared dead, 63 arrested as rival party supporters clash in Kano
Business activities were brought to a halt in the commercial city of Kano following clashes between rival political party supporters along Zaria road in the metropolis.
Tension heightened in the state following a resolve of three political parties to organise grand finale rallies for electioneering campaigns, ahead of Saturday February 25, 2023 Presidential and National Assembly elections.
Hundreds of political supporters laid siege along Zaria road, attacking innocent members of the public which was said to have resulted in the killing of four persons while scores sustained various degree of injuries.
The ugly development led to the arrest of no fewer than 63 individuals by men of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corpse (NSCDC).
Some of the thugs carrying dangerous weapons launched an attack which led to the burning of four cars along Zaria road, destroying many other vehicles on site.
In a press conference by the Public Relations Officer of the Civil Defence in Kano, DSC Ibrahim Abdullahi confirmed the arrest, saying: “We have arrested about 63 suspected thugs disrupting public peace, wielding dangerous weapons, burning vehicles and snatching handsets from people.
“They are going to be investigated and taken to court for prosecution,” he stated.
Three political parties held political rallies on Thursday day in the state including the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the rival New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as well as Action Alliance (AA).
The police command in Kano had advised political parties in the state to suspend all political rallies, Thursday, to avoid violent clashes after efforts to reach an agreement among them failed.
