Abducted Anambra Doctor, Cornelius Onuigbo, Freed After Days in Captivity
A medical doctor, Cornelius Onuigbo, has been freed by his abductors after being taken captive in Anambra State, Nigeria’s South-east region. Onuigbo, a urologist at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) in Nnewi, was abducted on Tuesday evening at the gate of his residence in Nnewi.
According to reports, gunmen ambushed Dr. Onuigbo as he arrived home, forced him into their vehicle, and sped off, sparking concerns within the medical community and his family.
On Thursday, staff members from the urology department at NAUTH, including Martina Onwuka, confirmed Dr. Onuigbo’s release. Although they did not provide further details, the news of his freedom brought relief to colleagues who were seen celebrating in their office.
Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the doctor’s release to PREMIUM TIMES on Friday, stating that Dr. Onuigbo had been safely reunited with his family. However, the police did not offer specifics about the circumstances of the release, including whether a ransom was involved.
As of now, questions remain regarding the details of the abduction and release, including the potential role of a ransom in securing his freedom. Dr. Onuigbo’s safe return is being celebrated by both his colleagues and the wider community, but many are still seeking clarity on the matter.
