A’Court nullifies Kaduna Speaker’s election, orders re-run in five PUs
Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja has nullified the election of Kaduna State House of Assembly Speaker, Yusuf Liman of All Progressives Congress (APC) representing Makera Constituency, and ordered re-run in five Polling Units (PUs).
The election tribunal in the state had, on September 30, 2023, ordered a re-run in 42 PUs; 37 in Makera Ward, two in Barnawa, and one each in Kakuri Gwari, Television and Kakuri Hausa wards to resolve the issue between Solomon Katuka of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Liman.
Dissatisfied with the tribunal judgment, APC, Liman, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) filed appeal against it. INEC also filed a cross-appeal seeking outright declaration of result.
The appellate court judgment delivered by Justice O.O. Adejumo, Justice A.O. Oyetola and Justice P.A. Obiora, had on Friday, dismissed the appeal by sacking the Speaker, ordering a re-run in five polling units namely Barnawa Ward PU 005 and 009, Kakuri Gwari Ward PU 006, Television Ward PU 022 and Kakuri Hausa Ward PU 045.
As it stands, APC has 17,470 votes and PDP 17,088.
The election was nullified on the margin of lead 382, which was less than the number of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) collected in the above polling units.
