Aiyedatiwa grants clemency to 117 convicts in Ondo
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has granted clemency to 117 convicts serving prison terms in the state, in celebration of Nigeria’s 64th Independence anniversary.
In a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan, the gesture was described as “a transformative decision aimed at reforming the lives of those affected.”
Adeniyan explained that the initiative followed recommendations from the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, reflecting a commitment to rehabilitation and second chances within the justice system.
“Among the beneficiaries, 19 convicts will be granted outright release, while some on death row will have their sentences commuted to life imprisonment. Additionally, several inmates will see their sentences reduced, offering them a chance for reintegration into society,” he said.
The decision was formally announced in a release signed by Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, who also chairs the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.
Governor Aiyedatiwa signed the release orders on September 27, 2024, with the changes set to take effect on October 1, 2024, aligning with the nation’s 64th Independence celebrations.
Governor Aiyedatiwa’s actions are in accordance with Section 212 (1) (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
The Advisory Council thoroughly assessed each application, ensuring its recommendations adhered to established guidelines and took various factors into consideration.
Ajulo noted that the Council’s deliberations were informed by insights from correctional authorities, legal experts, and distinguished community members, focusing on factors such as the nature of the offenses, length of incarceration, age, health, and the behavior of the inmates.
“This compassionate gesture underscores Governor Aiyedatiwa’s commitment to decongest correctional facilities in Ondo State and is a key component of ongoing justice sector reforms,” Ajulo added.
He concluded, “The approval of these releases not only represents an act of mercy but also reaffirms the belief in the potential for change and redemption in every individual.”
