Akwa Ibom Fire Trucks Leased to Multinational Firms in Shocking Scandal
Four suspects have been arrested in Akwa Ibom State after a shocking scheme involving the leasing of state-owned firefighting trucks to multinational companies in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The trucks were allegedly stolen by staff of the Akwa Ibom Fire Service and leased out for N140,000 per day, starting in 2021.
The state Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, revealed that the deal involved leasing four fire trucks to various companies at a rate of N140,000 per truck per day. A portion of the payment was split between the fire service officials and the company, with the officials receiving N60,000 per truck per day. The deal, which was set to last for three years, was intercepted just two months before its expiration, leading to the trucks being recovered and the suspects’ arrest.
Azare emphasized that the suspects would be charged in court, and the recovered trucks would be returned to the government to continue serving the people of Akwa Ibom.
